To print the products on this "Step Into Your Child’s World” CD please refer to the following printing guidelines.

Healthy Parenting Tool Kit materials are provided to you in portable document format (PDF), HTML, and in Microsoft® Word format. In order to view and print PDF documents, you must have installed on your computer the Acrobat® Reader software by Adobe®, version 4 or newer. You may download it free of charge from Adobe®. For assistance in downloading and installing the software, see Acrobat® Reader Troubleshooting Guide at the Adobe® Web Site. In order to view and print Microsoft® Word documents, you must have installed on you computer Microsoft® Word, version 2000 or newer.

“Scale to fit page” with PDF documents— do not “Scale to fit page” with Word documents

When you print PDF documents, ALWAYS select the “scale to fit” option to ensure that no part of the document falls in the non-printable margin area, which varies slightly from printer to printer. When you print Microsoft® Word documents (post cards and pass-along cards), NEVER select the “scale to fit” option. If you change the scaling of the Word documents, then the page content will not align properly with the card stock perforations. When you print Microsoft® Word documents, you might receive the message “The margins of selection 1 are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?” Always reply with “YES.” This is necessary in order for the image to align properly with card stock perforations. Even after you have followed printing instructions correctly, you might notice that the image prints slightly out of alignment with perforations. This is due to slight variations in the way different printers grab card stock and pass it through the print mechanism. If you have followed instructions correctly and the image aligns poorly, then this could be an indicator that your printer needs cleaning or service.

Inkjet printing- all kit materials can be printed with color laser printers. However, many of the materials feature color photography, which inkjet printers can reproduce at a high level of quality. We suggest that you print most kit materials at the “draft” print quality setting. Posters should be duplicated at “normal” or “high” resolution to ensure sharp photographs with good color saturation. While you can print all kit materials at “normal” or “high” resolution, be aware that your printing time and toner expense will increase.

Printing tips and reminders

Relocation postcards

Each of these documents feature four individual postcards, one of which is a “sample card.” When printing the second side of these cards, be sure the “sample” card is aligned, front and back, by selecting the proper leading edge when feeding paper into your printer. Refer to your printer instructions for more information about duplex printing.

Bookmarks and postcards
These materials are printed on both sides of the card stock. When duplex printing, it is best to first print the side that requires the least amount of ink. All kit materials printed on both sides require the lightest ink coverage on side two. Therefore, print side two first, then print side one.

Bookmarks: Select the proper paper style according to your printer specifications. Select “Scale to fit page” or “Fit to page” option. Trim out individual bookmarks along blue dashed lines. For durable bookmarks, use the heaviest paper stock your inkjet printer will tolerate.

General printing considerations

  • In printing kit materials, your goal is one of creating a document that is visually pleasing, as opposed to creating an image that is an exact match of the original. It is an unrealistic goal to have your image look in print exactly as it does on your monitor. This is further complicated by the fact that the colors in an image will look different on each monitor you use.
  • Duplex printing: If your printer will duplex print, then select that setting. Or, print one side, then flip the documents over and place them in the paper tray in the proper direction to print the second side. Refer to your printer instructions for more information about duplex printing.
  • Before printing on perforated card stock, read the printing tips packaged with the product.
  • Only card stock designed for an ink jet printer should be used with ink jet printers. Common card
stock and laser cards may not feed through consistently and may damage ink jet printers.
  • For trouble-free printing, keep your printer clean and do not let your ink cartridges run out of ink.
